Friendship | Here Am I

Friendship is a difficult concept. ?Miscommunication, betrayal, gossip, annoyance, hurt, and silence are all factors that can effect a relationship. ?I?ve had my own share of losses in this area, and I don?t believe that I am done losing, either. ?Relationships with certain people will come and go. ?Encouraging, however, is that these relationships were not pointless.

For everything there is a season,
and a time for every matter under heaven.
(Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Things happen. Situations aren?t always perfect. God didn?t intend for friendships to end in ways that they do. This is the consequence we endure because of sin. Fortunately, God can bring something good out of that broken situation.

I was reading a wonderful post by Sarah Markley this morning, and what an encouragement it was! ?While she shared about the loss of certain friendships, she urged us to see the gain that will one day come in God?s timing!

While I do see patterns in current friendships of mine that could cause a loss in the future, I?m not going to focus on what could come. ?Like I said, friendships are difficult. ?When those difficulties arise, I?m simply going to let go and, after making sure that if I caused a hurt, to truly apologize for it and make amends as best as I can, I?m not going to fret about what the other person thinks about me. ?I?m simply going to continue on with my life? losing those friendships if they chose to leave. ?I?m not going to bother holding on to the hurt, letting it build up and bitterness to creep in. ?I?ll always be available. ?I?ll always be a friend if someone is in need or want. ?However, I will not try to hold onto something that wants to be let go. ?I will move on, and I will wait for the gain that comes in time. True friendship. True community. ?All for the glory of God.

Now At Mixbook, Former Yobongo Team Reveals Mosaic, A Fast Way To Build Photobooks From Your iPhone

The team behind?Yobongo, the location-based mobile chat application that was acquired by Mixbook in March, is finally ready to reveal what they?ve been up to in the months since. We already knew that Mixbook wanted to expand into the mobile photobook space, and had essentially hired the Yobongo team for their talents, not the Yobongo application itself. And those talents have been put to good use it seems. The forthcoming iOS application called ?Mosaic? aims to address all the reasons why photobooks aren?t more popular, which includes the time it takes to make them, the cost, and the way they?re currently marketed.

The Yobongo team has been operating in stealth mode since joining Mixbook ? the rest of the company was only filled in on Wednesday about the project. To be clear, the mobile photobook app isn?t meant to be a new direction for the company as a whole, but a way to reach a new demographic of potential users ? those who have never before created a photobook.

?We set out to challenge the core assumptions about what a photobook was and who a photobook should be for,? says Yobongo co-founder Caleb Elston. ?We found that there?s lots of people who have heard of photobooks, but not a lot of people have actually made their own.? One of the reasons which has hindered photobook adoption in the past, says Elston, is the way they?ve been traditionally marketed ? that is, that they?re meant for ?special?occasions? and major life events like births, weddings, anniversaries, or family vacations.

First of all, those types of events don?t happen all the time, which limits the number of opportunities to create one.?But it also doesn?t accurately reflect how people take and enjoy photos today.?People are no longer just snapping photos at big events ? thanks to the ubiquity of cameraphones, they?re taking photos everyday, everywhere. On the social photo-sharing website Flickr, for example, the top two ?cameras? represented are the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4.

In addition, photobooks can be expensive and time-consuming to build. ?We?ve seen people taking upwards of 12 hours making their books,? Elston told us. ?For the people who do that, they actually enjoy that process, but that can seeming daunting to others.? (No kidding. It?s my own ?weekend project? that never gets done. My kid?s baby book is about two and half years late.)?

With Mosaic, Mixbook hopes to address all these pain points associated with traditional photobooks. They?ve taken care to design an app which lets you build a photo book in a minute or so, instead of hours. To accomplish this, one feature they?ve focused on is the photo picker, Elston says. In some apps, selecting photos is tedious and slow, and you often have to upload items one-by-one. Also, when you take multiple shots of the same thing, it?s hard to tell in the small thumbnail view which is the best. Plus, it tends to be difficult to upload a lot of photos all at once. Elston says Mosaic has addressed these problems head on, but unfortunately, we can?t confirm that yet because the app is not publicly available now.

To keep costs down, Mosaic has also limited the output to just one product SKU. There?s no variety of books to choose from, and there aren?t tons of page templates. Well, that sounds like the photo books might be kind of boring, then, I told Elston. Homogenous even. But he hinted that Mosaic is doing something interesting with the covers to keep each one looking unique.

For now, photos will be sourced from the iOS Camera Roll and Photostream, but it may offer social network integration later on. Exact pricing is not set, but it will be per-book, with possible subscription plans offered in the future. ?Although the app won?t launch publicly until sometime pre-holiday season 2012, TechCrunch readers who sign up from this link?will get early access.

Qatar to invest $18B in Egypt over next 5 years

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's prime minister says Qatar has agreed to invest $18 billion in Egypt over the next five years to help boost the country's ailing economy.

Hesham Kandil announced the agreement Thursday at a joint news conference with Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani.

Kandil says the investment will target Egypt's industrial, tourism and energy sectors.

The funds aim to help revive Egypt's battered economy and lure back foreign investment that has all but disappeared since last year's uprising.

Revenues from tourism ? one of Egypt's biggest money-makers and employers ? fell 30 percent to $9 billion in 2011 and the industry is only making a meager recovery.

Qatar has already delivered around $500 million of a promised $2 billion loan to Egypt's central bank.

NHL players union reportedly preps for lockout

The National Hockey League Players Association appears to be stepping up preparations for its members if the threatened lockout by the NHL takes place on Sept. 15.

Citing a union memo it had obtained, USA Today reported Wednesday that the NHLPA will hold a two-day meeting in New York City next week prior to the Friday, Sept. 15 lockout deadline. That meeting is likely to answer many of the pressing questions that union membership has and what preparations to make if the lockout indeed occurs.

The memo has a rather telling title: "How Does a Lockout Affect Me?"

It is slated to answer questions from membership as the NHL prepares to invoke its third player lockout in the last 18 years, dating back to 1994.

According to the USA Today report, the memo answers queries such as whether currently injured players will still receive paychecks during the lockout (answer: they will). Among players that fall into that category are New York Rangers left wing Marian Gaborik (recovering from shoulder surgery), Boston Bruins center Marc Savard and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger (both are recuperating from concussions).

"If you are unfit to play because of a hockey-related injury when a lockout begins, you are entitled to receive your salary until you are fit to play," the memo said. "If you are currently injured, you should make sure that your condition is fully documented and that your club is aware of it. If you do not receive your salary payment when it becomes due, you should contact your agent and/or the NHLPA legal department immediately."

One other point of contention is whether players will be allowed to play in other leagues during the lockout. However, if those players are injured playing for other teams in other leagues, they may have trouble returning to the NHL when the lockout is eventually lifted.

"We expect that your NHL club would suspend you without pay until you are fit to play," the NHLPA memo said. "There also is a possibility that the club might take other disciplinary action. The NHLPA may be able to dispute such suspensions and disciplinary actions under the grievance and arbitration procedure.

"If you intend to play for a club in another league during a lockout, we recommend that you ask that club to insure the value of your SPC (standard players' contract) against injury. If the club is unwilling to do so, we recommend that you purchase disability insurance on your own."

Besides currently injured players, other NHLPA members will still receive various amounts of monies during the lockout, if it occurs, including signing bonuses, returns of escrow monies and buyout payments.

UN: No evidence of new food price crisis

(AP) ? The U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization says current prices do not justify talk of a new world food crisis.

Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva says the latest data is "reassuring." Agency officials say the food price index of basic foods remained unchanged in August from July.

FAO official David Hallam told reporters in Rome on Thursday that "there is no strong evidence" to suggest another food price crisis, such as that which sparked unrest in the developing world in 2007-2008.

FAO's latest monthly report found that while there was no overall rise in food prices last month, prices are still high.

While meat and dairy prices rose, sugar prices fell sharply. July's index had reflected soaring prices amid droughts affecting corn and wheat crops.

Facebook closes its purchase of Instagram

Published: Sep 6, 2012 at 9:15 AM PDT
NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook has closed its purchase of Instagram, the wildly popular photo-sharing app that it agreed to buy before its initial public offering in May.

The deal was valued at $1 billion when the companies agreed to it in April. But Facebook's stock price has lost half of its value since its IPO. With Facebook trading around $19 a share at midday Thursday, the deal is worth about $737 million, $300 million of it in cash and the rest in stock.

Even at the lower price, Instagram is by far Facebook's largest acquisition and the only one that Facebook has promised to keep going, rather than shutting it down.

"Instagram will continue to serve its community, and we will help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure," said Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering at Facebook Inc., in a blog post. Facebook is also hiring Instagram's dozen or so employees and said it will work with them to help improve its own mobile applications.

Instagram has a fast-growing and loyal user base of iPhone and Android users who take photos and apply various filters to them to share. Unlike Facebook, which was created with computers in mind, Instagram exists only as a mobile application.

Thomas Beatie: Dating Amber Nicholas, Hoping for Fourth Child

Thomas Beatie is hoping to support the pregnant woman this time around.

The 38-year old - who first made headlines in 2007 after undergoing transgender surgery, yet preserving the organs needed to give birth - split from his wife in April of this year and is now dating someone named Amber Nicholas.

And he tells The Sunday Mirror that he wants to have another child, with one major catch:

Thomas Beatie Pregnant Picture

"Being pregnant is the most incredible experience," Beatie says to the newspaper. "But we want Amber to do it this time around. I think it would be amazing to experience pregnancy as the father."

While married to ex-wife Nancy, Thomas gave birth to three children. And he's not against trying for another, even if it means defying doctor's orders.

“My surgeon has advised against me getting pregnant because it would be a lot harder now I’m biologically a man," Beatie says, adding that he would need to go with a caesarian delivery "but I’d willingly do it to have another bundle of joy" if that's how Amber prefers it.

Oil up above $116 on stimulus hopes

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil prices rose for a fourth day to over $116 per barrel, supported by hopes for further stimulus measures from central banks in the United States and Europe, and a slow production restart in the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Isaac.

Front-month Brent crude futures were up 64 cents to $116.42 a barrel by 6:19 a.m. EDT (1019 GMT). U.S. crude futures were up 70 cents to $97.17 a barrel from Friday's settlement. U.S. markets were shut on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

Analysts said the market was in a bullish mood ahead of a European Central Bank (ECB) meeting on Thursday and a two-day gathering of U.S. Federal Reserve policymakers next week.

"The main driver at the moment is the expectation around an ECB announcement on Thursday - investors are looking for some indications of more bond buying," said Filip Petersson, Commodity Strategist at SEB Commodity Research.

"They are also looking to see if the U.S. non-farm payrolls on Friday will be bad enough to keep the door open for QE3."

ECB President Mario Draghi said on Monday that short-term sovereign bond purchases by the ECB would not breach European Union rules. This has raised expectations that on Thursday he will give details of a new debt-buying scheme to help deeply indebted eurozone members.

"We will remain on an upwards price trend running into this ECB meeting on the back of these stimulus hopes, despite weakening fundamentals in the oil market," said Carsten Fritsch, an energy analyst at Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

He said the worsening economic outlook suggests a deterioration in oil demand whilst supplies remain ample.

"Last week's OPEC production survey signalled continued over-supply, Russian crude oil production in August was the highest since the end of the Soviet Union [ID:nL6E8K208H], and Iraq has ramped up oil exports to the highest level in three decades, so there is plenty of oil in the market at the moment," he said.

Fritsch believes oil prices are building up "correction potential" in the event that the central banks do not live up to expectations.

But for now oil fundamentals are taking a back seat to monetary stimulus hopes, with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech at Jackson Hole last week keeping a third round of quantitative easing a possibility.

As well as Friday's U.S. non-farm payroll figures, the market is eyeing U.S. Institute for Supply Management (ISM)data, due later on Tuesday.

"This is the main thing that could move markets in this session as we are very demand-side driven at the moment," said Petersson. "It's an important indicator for the Fed when making their decision on QE3."

The ISM is forecast to have improved to the psychologically important level of 50 in August, from 49.8 in July.

PRODUCTION OFFLINE

U.S. crude is also supported by the fact that nearly 60 percent of offshore crude oil production in the Gulf of Mexico is still offline after Hurricane Isaac, according to U.S. government reports.

"There seems to be more delay in starting up production," said Petersson. At the same time, most of the Louisiana oil refineries affected by the storm have restarted.

Olivier Jakob, an energy analyst at Petromatrix in Switzerland, pointed out that due to precautionary shutdowns, Isaac had resulted in more crude oil production loss than in the entire 2010 and 2011 seasons combined.

Tension between Iran and Israel continues to bubble away in the background, encouraging speculators to position themselves for an oil price spike.

"We are seeing speculative positions back at very high levels - the shorts have been falling quite heavily and the longs are building up again," said Petersson.
