Verizon Cloud backup service rolling out for Android, comes soon to iOS

Verizon Cloud sync app rolls out for Android, comes to iOS soon

Smartphone owners have no shortage of cloud-based safety nets, whether it's Google's services, iCloud or any number of file sync providers. Few of these come from the carrier, however, and Verizon is gambling that its now-deploying Verizon Cloud service will serve as a crutch for anyone replacing a phone on its network. The currently Android- and web-only release offers daily backups of the usual media libraries as well as call logs, contacts and messages. While that isn't special in itself, Verizon is also promising cross-platform safeguards: both an iOS app (available "soon") and future OS support should let customers fetch some of their data if they switch platforms. Just don't count on Verizon Cloud as an alternative to established rivals unless you're both loyal to Verizon and willing to spend. Users get a thin 500MB of space for free, and meaningful storage ranges from $3 per month for 25GB through to $10 for 125GB. Should there be little danger of leaving Big Red, though, Verizon's service and a matching Android app update are available today.

Researcher reveals new way to safeguard forensic dna samples against contamination

Apr. 29, 2013 ? DNA evidence is invisible and remarkably easy to transfer, making it possible for a sample to be spilled or even planted on a piece of evidence.

Boise State University professor Greg Hampikian has now developed a solution that permanently marks DNA samples to prevent contamination. Hampikian has used nullomers, the smallest DNA sequences that are absent from nature, to create the DNA bar code.

He has been working on the invention for more than a decade and recently demonstrated its results for the first time in his Boise State lab. His research will be published by The Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

U.S. soldiers must give DNA samples, and Hampikian's research has been sponsored by the Department of Defense.

"The truth is that DNA contamination is a fact of life in all laboratories," Hampikian said. "This problem is compounded by techniques that make billons of copies of DNA, and new instruments that detect even just a few molecules. Unfortunately, samples taken from victims and other innocent people are still processed in the same place as samples from weapons, bodies and other evidence."

Hampikian has joint appointments in the departments of biology and criminal justice at Boise State and also is the director of the Idaho Innocence Project. In his Boise State lab, Hampikian and student and faculty collaborators work on diverse DNA projects, including developing new cancer drugs, discovering new species of single-celled organisms in Idaho, studying Basque sex chromosomes and inventing micro devices.

Several years ago, Hampikian and Boise State computer science colleague Tim Andersen identified tiny DNA and protein sequences that were absent in nature and Hampikian termed these sequences 'nullomers.' The researchers proposed that these sequences could have properties that were incompatible with life, and might serve as drugs to kill pathogens and even cancer.

The first results of nullomer-based drugs were published in October 2012 in the peer-reviewed journal Peptides and showed that these compounds killed breast and prostate cancer cells in the laboratory

In addition, Hampikian was a key member of the Amanda Knox defense team and continues to work on cases of wrongful conviction. He also was inducted as a Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors this year.

The Greatest Material for Your Furniture Cover | Reference and ...

Relaxing outdoors is fantastic when the sun is out, but how about when it?s cold and wet? By purchasing top quality garden furniture, this will increase the lifespan of your home furniture. Nothing compares to spending time in a sunny garden with friends or family, and that?s why investing in high-quality furniture is encouraged. By constructing covers to place over your garden furniture and even your BBQ grill, you can lengthen your garden furniture?s lifespan even further.

In order to keep your garden items fully protected from the weather and the elements, furniture covers will are the perfect garden accessory. Furniture covers help to keep furniture clean and dry at all times (see outdoor furniture cover). These can be picked up from a variety of garden outlets and are entirely affordable. What?s more, they save you a fortune in the long-run, by prolonging the quality and life of your furnishings. All you need to decide is? which material cover you should choose??

Canvas Covers

A furniture cover constructed from canvas (see chiminea cover) is a heavy-duty furniture cover and is well suited to furniture that remains outdoors all year. Canvas is great at protecting your garden furnishings from a variety of different weather types, from rain to sunshine and so on. Its weight means it won?t blow about in the wind. The only downside to canvas is that it can be tricky to move around if you have a large cover, particularly if it gets wet in the rain.?

Nylon Covers

Nylon is a particularly cheap choice of cover, and helps to protect your furniture from moisture. Its lightweight nature means its easy to move around and easy to store upon removal. The downside to using a nylon cover is that it isn?t suitable for use when covering a grill or BBQ as even the slightest bit of heat will cause the nylon to melt. However, nylon is resistant to both mildew and mould. Due to its lightweight nature, the cover will need to be weighted down to stop it from blowing away.?

Crypton Covers

This is the newest variety of furniture cover on the market (outdoor furniture set cover). It costs more than canvas and nylon, but it can be purchased in a wide selection of textures and patterns. Crypton is guaranteed against stains and bacteria, making it a great choice of furniture cover. Not only is it water resistant, but it is also resistant to mould and bacteria. Its moisture barrier prevents your furniture from getting wet, whilst remaining breathable. You can purchase Crypton in suede, woven fabric and textured fabric.

Dollar falls against the yen; bond yields decline

By Leah Schnurr

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar tumbled against the yen on Friday after the Bank of Japan left its monetary policy unchanged, while benchmark U.S. bond yields fell to near 4-1/2-month lows after the U.S. economy grew less than expected in the first quarter.

The disappointing growth rate spurred concerns about a tepid outlook for the United States which, along with recent concerns that China's growth is slowing, also hit the price of oil. Brent crude fell to just above $103 a barrel after rising $3 in the past two sessions.

China and the United States are the world's two largest oil consumers.

The BoJ held off from announcing new monetary policy on Friday, which was not unexpected, but board members suggested inflation may still fall short of the central bank's target for some time. The outlook on inflation in the bank's semi-annual economic report highlighted concerns that the BoJ has an unrealistic goal in its battle to end 15 years of deflation.

The BoJ's announcement in early April of plans for $1.4 trillion in new monetary stimulus triggered a sharp selloff in the yen. However, traders said market expectations for ongoing weakness in the yen had come too far, too quickly. Recent lackluster U.S. data has added to dollar selling, which accelerated on Friday.

"The selling started to feed on itself, and everyone started to jump on the selling bandwagon," said Charles St-Arnaud, foreign exchange strategist at Nomura Securities in New York.

The dollar fell as low 97.54 yen and was down 1.2 percent at 98.02 in late New York trade.

U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the first quarter. While that was a jump from the tepid growth seen in the final quarter of last year, it disappointed expectations for a 3 percent pace.

The data and weakness on Wall Street lifted bond prices, with 30-year Treasuries up 28/32 at 105-07/32 to yield 2.862 percent.

The benchmark 10-year note's yield fell to 1.665 percent, just a shade higher than the low of 1.643 percent reached earlier in the week.

"The thoughts about slower growth and disinflation have been mostly priced at these levels," said Mike Cullinane, head of Treasuries trading at D.A. Davidson in St. Petersburg, Florida. "If we were to see another month of weak data, we could see yields grind lower."

The data could raise doubts about the ability of the economy to absorb government spending cuts and higher taxes and may fuel speculation of the possibility of more Federal Reserve measures to boost growth, or at least keep the Fed's current stimulus plans in place.

Wall Street ended little changed in light volume, with a slight loss on the S&P 500 ending a five-day winning streak for the index.

"We traded off a decent amount after the GDP number but we didn't break any technical levels or really didn't get much momentum in the selloff past late morning," said Paul Zemsky, head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management in New York.

"I guess there was some bottom fishing. There was so much fear of poor earnings going into earnings season that this is still somewhat of a positive surprise."

A drop in Amazon.com weighed on the market after the Internet retailer gave a disappointing outlook, sending its shares down more than 7 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> edged up 11.75 points, or 0.08 percent, to 14,712.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> slipped 2.92 points, or 0.18 percent, to 1,582.24. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> fell 10.72 points, or 0.33 percent, to 3,279.26.

Investors in European equities also took a breather after five days of gains. Europe's top shares on the FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> closed down 0.4 percent, and world shares <.miwd00000pus> were off 0.2 percent.

A growing belief that the European Central Bank will react to the recent deterioration in the euro zone's economy by cutting interest rates next Thursday helped European stocks rise this week, pushed the euro to a three-week low and contributed to a fall in bond yields.

A gloomy new set of surveys from the ECB further supported those rate cut calls, as they underscored the slowdown in lending and the difficulties companies in the bloc are facing to get credit.

Brent fell 25 cents to $103.16 a barrel, while U.S. crude settled down 64 cents at $93.00.

Boston bombing suspect moved to prison facility

>> following that breaking news tied to the boston marathon attack.

>> that's right, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev has now been confined at the bureau of prison federal medical center at ft. devins after being moved overnight.

>> we go right to nbc's jeff rossen for more and the suspect's plans for an alleged attack in times square .

>> reporter: good morning, we begin with breaking news, there have been outcries because dzhokhar tsarnaev had been treated at beth israel medical center the same exact hospital where many victims were treated. earlier this morning he was transported to this federal prison at fort devens , massachusetts, 40 miles outside of boston to the west. it is a specialized facility that treats inmates with long-term medical needs and also on a decommissioned military base. the u.s. marshal service confirmed the move overnight. let's get you up to date on the latest plan to attack times square . this was not a well planned attack thought out for months. instead the suspects came up with this on the fly last thursday and we're going to drive here to times square that night with six new bombs. officials now say if not for this shoot-out last week with watertown police, tamerlan and dzhokhar tsarnaev may have gone through with it. they just carjacked this mercedes suv. overnight the carjacking victim, a chinese entrepreneur providing new details to "the boston globe ." "don't look at me he says tamerlan yelled at him. later tamer lane says okay you're chinese, i'm a muslim. chinese are friendly to muslims. the victim responded we are so friendly to muslims. the victim was able to get away but during that ride the brothers hatched the new plan, drive to new york 's times square and set off their remaining explosives.

>> one was a pressure cooker bomb similar to the two that had exploded at the marathon. the other five were pipe bombs .

>> reporter: dzhokhar was in times square at least once last year posing with friends in this photo. luckily he didn't make it back this time.

>> they had built these additional explosives and we know they had the capacity to carry out the attacks.

>> reporter: new york city officials have high tech surveillance cameras to prevent these kinds of attacks. the nypd showed us how they can flag an abandoned package before it explodes. it gives you an image and circles the package.

>> it shows us exactly where the package was left.

>> reporter: back in boston we're learning new details about dzhokhar's bedside court appearance. source familiar with the hearing says he showed no reaction when the prosecutor explained he could face the death penalty. meanwhile his mother in russia is still defending her boys, seen here in a family photo apparently taken in 2007 .

>> i thought america was going to protect us, our kids, it's going to be safe. america took my kids away from me.

>> reporter: a live picture of times square . it is important to note that there is no credible threat to new york , but new york mayor michael bloomberg made a point in his news conference yesterday saying this plan is proof that new york city remains a prime target for terrorists. once again, savannah, to recap the breaking news overnight, dzhokhar tsarnaev, the younger suspect, the surviving suspect, moved from beth israel medical center in boston to a federal prison 40 miles west of boston where he will remain.

Newark high school students walk out of class to protest budget cuts

?

By Sofia Perpetua, NBCNews.com

Nearly a thousand of Newark high schoolers walked out of their classes Tuesday to protest budget cuts that include teacher layoffs, school closures and hits to after-school programs.

Students from half a dozen Newark schools walked out of class at noon chanting ?Stand up, fight back.? They marched to Rutgers Law School, where the State Assembly was holding hearings on the proposed budget.

Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, proposed a $32.8 billion budget that includes an all-time high $8.9 billion for public education in the state.

Newark schools will receive $714 million but the protest organizers don't think that is enough, as it would underfund the district by about $53 million.

"This $53 million is real; students see it in the cutting of clubs and extracurricular activities, sports, teachers and administration," protest organizer Robert Cabanas of the group NJ Communities United told Reuters. "They don't think they should have to see any of those things go."

New Jersey's state government has been in control of Newark schools for the past 18 years.

When the Christie?s budget proposal was unveiled in February, he noted that there were no cuts in individual districts. Christie's office did not respond to calls seeking comment.

When Christie took office in 2010, he cut state aid to schools by $820 million and districts in Newark and Camden were hit heavily with layoffs and closures. Last year, seven schools were shut down in March about 100 teachers and other school personnel were laid off.

Other U.S. cities have also been hit with cuts. Last month, Chicago announced it would close 54 schools by the beginning of the next academic year.

Key pathway to stop dangerous, out-of-control inflammation discovered

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

A potential new strategy to developing new drugs to control inflammation without serious side effects has been found by Georgia State University researchers and international colleagues.

Jian-Dong Li, director of Georgia State's Center for Inflammation, Immunity and Infection, and his team discovered that blocking a certain pathway involved in the biological process of inflammation will suppress it.

Inhibiting a molecule called phosphodiesterase 4B, or PDE4B, suppresses inflammation by affecting a key gene called CLYD, a gene that serves as a brake on inflammation.

The research was published in the journal Nature Communications.

Li explained the process of overactive inflammation using a "police" analogy.

When a pathogen ? such as bacteria or viruses -- infects a patient, he said, it triggers an "alarm" to which the "police" of immune system respond. In turn, it triggers neutrophil attractant called cytokines to respond, leading to inflammation that serves to help rid the body of the pathogen. But if inflammation isn't stopped, tissue damage can result.

The pathways during the response are termed "positive," like a gas pedal on a car, and "negative," like a brake, with the process in the positive pathway going down the line from the pathogen to inflammation, and negative going the other direction. PDE4B is involved in controlling the negative pathway.

Many researchers have been focusing on developing anti-inflammatory agents by stopping the positive pathway, but the discovery by Li and his colleagues gives scientists a new route to stop inflammation using safer or even existing drugs proven to be non-toxic as they have found that accelerating the negative pathway will reduce inflammation.

"This is the key negative regulator that we have been searching after for years, " Li said.

There is a need for better drugs to control inflammation, because current treatments come with serious side effects, Li said. Steroids are commonly used, but cannot be used over the long-term. Steroids suppress the immune system.

Two dead after shooting, blaze at Detroit medical facility

By Corey Williams, The Associated Press

DETROIT -- A man identified by employees as a former maintenance worker opened fire Tuesday inside a Detroit medical facility, sending workers and visitors screaming and rushing for the doors just moments before the building erupted in flames.

Crews digging through the gutted Park Medical Centers building hours after the fire recovered the remains of a man and a woman, Detroit police said Tuesday night in a release.

Authorities did not release the identities of the dead, pending autopsies, but police had been searching for 35-year-old medical assistant Sharita Williams and the fired maintenance worker, who relatives said was her ex-boyfriend.

Williams' mother, Antha Williams-Hill, told The Associated Press that one of her daughter's co-workers told her that the man threatened her daughter inside.

"He said, 'You think I'm playing with you?'" Williams-Hill said. "He told the other girl, 'I think you better get out of here.' The girl left and said she then heard two shots."

Last week, Sharita Williams was granted a personal protection order against the man, according to Wayne County Court records.

Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, a podiatrist who operated his private practice from the building for about 30 years, said he heard a security guard yell that the gunman "had taken Sharita and is shooting at other people in the building."

Destroyed in the blaze, Kirschenbaum said, was his collection of boxing gloves, personal letters and photos of boxing great Joe Louis. He estimated the memorabilia were worth about $100,000.

Dwane Blackmon, Detroit police homicide inspector, declined to identify the maintenance man as the suspect but said everyone else inside except the woman and male suspect appeared to have escaped the blaze.

Investigators were unable to quickly go deep into the one-story building, described by tenants as also having a basement, due to fears of the structure's integrity.

Williams-Hill said she was asked to go to the coroner's office to identify whether the deceased woman was her daughter "because of the condition of the body."

She said her daughter had been dating the married maintenance man for more than a year, but their relationship was rocky and Sharita eventually began seeing someone else and even moved out of the city and into a Detroit suburb to get away. However, he refused to leave her alone, Williams-Hill said.

Hey guys, so if you guys saw my post a little while back I am writing a program that takes in 10 digit ISBN numbers in the form of strings, I then check the ISBN to see if its valid, and then i print out if it is valid or not. Basically, if an 'X' appears in the ISBN as the last digit, it is supposed to assign that index in the array to the value of 10, and if 'X' is any where else in the array the ISBN is invalid. Here is My code:

#include <iostream> #include <string>  using namespace std;  int main() { 	int keep = 0; 	string isbn[20]; do{          cin >> isbn[keep];        } while (isbn[keep][0] != 4 && keep++ < 20);        for (int i = 0; i < keep; i++){ //looping through all of the strings      int save = 0; 	int partial[10]; for (int k = 0; k < isbn[i].length(); k++){ //looping through all of the characters 	        if ((isbn[i][k] >= '0' && isbn[i][k] <= '9') || (save == 10 && isbn[i][k] == 'X')){ //checking if ISBN is valid 		   int next = 0; 		   if (isbn[i][k] == 'X') 			   partial[save] = 10; 		   else 			   next = (int)(isbn[i][k] - '0'); 		   if (save == 0) 			   partial[save] = next; 		   else  			   partial[save] = partial[save-1] + next;               		   save++;  	   }  	   else if (isbn[i][k] != '-'){  		   cout << isbn[i][k] << " is not valid" << endl;  		   break;  	   } 	          } int use = partial[0]; for (int j = 0; j < 9; j++){ use += partial[j + 1]; } if (use % 11 == 0){ cout << isbn[i] << " is valid." << endl; } else 	cout << isbn[i] << " is not valid" << endl; }   }

Basically, it works for all ISBN's except for the ISBN's with the X as the last digit. It will just print out X is invalid, so for some reason it isn't getting picked up in my big if statement. What do you guys think is causing this issue? Could it be that it is just reading the first part of the if and not looking at the second part of the if statement? I tried changing it to save == 9, and this time it doesnt print out X is invalid, but still says that the isbn number is invalid. Two ISBN's you guys can try are 0 1 3 1 6 2 9 5 9 X or 0-1315-2447-X (dashed don't matter).

    Thanks!

(and if you are testing the code and wondering how to stop entering the ISBN's, type ctrl + D and hit enter and it will drop you out of the loop)

It's not the root cause of your problem, but you do have a problem of overrunning your array in the loop on lines 50-52.

And your algorithm for checking the check digit seems to be missing the multiplication of each digit as described in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia....git_calculation

Yeah I am using an algorithm my teacher has given me, and it works for all of the ISBN's he has given me except for the ones with X's at the end. a couple of the ones he has given me are 0-89237-010-6 0-8306-3637-4, my algorithm is fine from what I have checked, I am just having problems with ISBN's with X's at the end

I'm making a guess, but based on what I'm seeing, this is your problem.

 (isbn[i][k] >= '0' && isbn[i][k] <= '9') || (save == 10 && isbn[i][k] == 'X')

Problem is, when does save = 10? The only time I see you setting Save is if it passes this if statement and has an 'X'. And you have an And statement so..

    save == 10 AND isbn[i][k] == 'X'

Except, Save will never equal 10...unless it passes this if check and gets down to the primary if isbn == x. But it won't, again, because save is never 10 at the same time the isbn is X and since X is greater than 0 but also greater than 9, it just passes the giant if statement when it hits an X and hits the elseif.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has apologized to California Attorney General Kamala Harris for causing a stir when he called her "the best-looking attorney general" at a Democratic fundraiser they attended together this week.

A spokesman for Harris said she had a great conversation with Obama and strongly supports him but would not say whether she had accepted the president's apology.

Obama apologized to Harris by telephone Thursday night after returning from two days of fundraising in California, White House press secretary Jay Carney said.

At a fundraiser in Silicon Valley earlier that day, Obama raised eyebrows when he said Harris "happens to be, by far, the best-looking attorney general in the country. It's true! C'mon." He prefaced the remark by saying she is "brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you'd want in anybody who is administering the law."

Harris was present and had addressed the crowd before the president spoke.

The "best-looking" comment instantly lit up news blogs and websites, with some highlighting it as an example of the hurdles working women still face.

Carney and Harris' spokesman, Gil Duran, both noted that Obama and Harris are longtime friends.

"He called her to apologize for the distraction created by his comments," Carney told reporters Friday. "He did not want in any way to diminish the attorney general's professional accomplishments and her capabilities."

He noted that Obama also commented on Harris' smarts.

Carney went on to say that Obama "fully recognizes the challenge women continue to face in the workplace and that they should not be judged based on appearance."

In an emailed statement, Duran noted the longstanding ties between Obama and Harris.

"They had a great conversation yesterday, and she strongly supports him," he said.

Duran later said he would not comment beyond the statement. He declined to say whether Harris had accepted the president's apology or whether she was offended by his comment.

Harris had scheduled no public appearances Friday and was not expected to comment herself.

Harris and Obama have campaigned for each other in prior elections. Some pundits also have described her as a female version of Obama because of her stage presence and because, like the president, she is of mixed race.

Rutgers alumni call for probe on coach's firing

With political and social pressure mounting after video showed Rice screaming gay slurs and shoving, kicking and throwing balls at his NCAA college basketball players, the university fired Rice on Wednesday, and then did their best to avoid the blame for not getting it right four months ago. (AP Photo/Rich Schultz, File)

(AP) ? Mike Rice was fired as the Rutgers men's basketball coach after a video surfaced showing him shoving players and berating them with gay slurs, but critics said New Jersey's flagship public university still has more explaining ? and maybe some more firing ? to do.

A group of 13 faculty members Wednesday demanded that university President Robert Barchi resign for his "inexcusable handling" of the situation.

Alumni, lawmakers and a gay-rights group are among those calling for an investigation into why university officials took months to fire Rice after getting the video from a former basketball program employee in a scandal that touches on two long-standing issues on campus: the role of sports and the treatment of gays.

"If the roles were reversed and this was a professor and not a coach and this was a student in the classroom as opposed to a collegiate player this would be completely different. You wouldn't say, 'This was a first offense,'" said Glenn Articolo, a radiologist who lives in Marlton and a 1991 Rutgers graduate. "There's not a single employee at Rutgers University from the president to the janitor who wouldn't be dismissed immediately. It seems there's a double standard when it comes to the basketball coach or the football coach."

Some alumni say athletic director Tim Pernetti should also be dismissed and some are questioning what Barchi knew, and when.

In a statement Wednesday, Barchi, who took office in September, said he was told of the video in November and agreed that it would be appropriate to suspend Rice, fine him and send him to anger management counseling. But he said he saw the video for himself only this week, and it was then that he decided Rice should be fired.

Pernetti also issued a statement Wednesday, but he and Barchi were not made available to answer reporters' questions.

Because he lasted the season, Rice is due a $100,000 bonus on top of his salary. He was paid $622,500 in 2012. Athletic Department spokesman Jason Baum said he'll get the bonus for coaching the final game of the 2012-13 season last month because it's contractually obligated.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, a Democrat who spoke about the topic on several radio and television shows Wednesday, is calling for legislative hearings on the details.

The gay-rights group Garden State Equality also called for an investigation.

Much of the anger over the university's handling of the situation came because Rice was not fired until after the public saw the video.

"Why did they fire him? Just because the tape came out?" asked Jim Walton, a 1980 Rutgers graduate who is now a compliance and ethics manager in Philadelphia. "They already knew the truth. If he should have been fired today, he should have been fired a long time ago."

Some at Rutgers, a long-time also-ran in major sports, have been debating for years whether it's been worth it to spend more money and put more focus on trying to elevate the university's football and men's basketball programs.

The university has also dealt with how gay students are treated since Tyler Clementi, a freshman there, killed himself in 2010 days after learning his roommate had used a webcam to see him kissing another man. The roommate spent 20 days in jail last year after a jury convicted him of bias intimidation and other crimes in a case that sparked policy changes to try to make Rutgers friendlier to gay students.

"After the suicide of Tyler Clementi, I thought my alma mater would take the use of gay slurs by any member of the Rutgers community ? students, faculty, administrators, or coaches ? seriously," said Debbie Hadley, a 1991 Rutgers graduate who is a naturalist in Jackson. "Clearly, Tim Pernetti did not. And yes, I believe he should be fired, too."

Some students agreed that the coach needed to be ousted.

Alison Coopersmith, an 18-year-old first-year student majoring in political science said that if gay slurs are not tolerated by students, they shouldn't be tolerated by professionals, either.

"It's worse when they're in a position of power," she said.

But on campus, not everyone was up in arms Wednesday.

Taylor Akers, a 19-year-old sophomore pre-med major, said Rice should not have been fired. "That happens all the time," he said.

    Ta'amuGetty Images

Last year, Steelers rookie defensive lineman Alameda Ta?amu was involved in a DUI incident that extended far beyond the run-of-the-mill drunk driving arrest.

A fourth-round pick in 2012, Ta?amu allegedly evaded the police, crashing his vehicle into other cars after nearly running over an officer whose gun was drawn.? He was charged with felony counts of fleeing police, aggravated assault while driving drunk, and three counts of aggravated assault, along with 10 misdemeanors including resisting arrest, attempting escape, drunk driving, and failure to obey traffic laws.

Ta?amu allegedly ran past two other officers who also had their guns drawn.

In other words, Ta?amu is lucky he?s alive.? He?s also lucky he?s not going to prison.

According to the Associated Press, Ta?amu has pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and drunk driving.? For his sentence, he?ll spend four days in a ?DUI hotel? and serve 18 months probation.

?I know what I?ve done is wrong,? Ta?amu said.? ?I?d do anything to make it right.? What I did affected my whole family.? I?ve got to keep learning from my mistakes.? So far, I think I?ve done a good job of staying away [from alcohol].?

The Steelers suspended Ta?amu for two games after the arrest, which arguably prevents the NFL from imposing another suspension.? He later was cut but then re-signed to the practice squad.? Ta?amu currently is a member of the team?s offseason roster.

5 Ways To Find Work When There Are No Jobs

    Forbes:

The premise of a new book by Chicago career coach and management training consultant Roger Wright: there is plenty of work out there, but not necessarily a lot of jobs with benefits and a steady paycheck. The book, released in Feb., is called Finding Work When There are No Jobs. Wright, 58, believes that job seekers should try to match their personal story with the needs of communities and employers. Do that and you stand the best chance of finding work, and possibly a permanent job.

Chimps: Ability to 'think about thinking' not limited to humans

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Humans' closest animal relatives, chimpanzees, have the ability to "think about thinking" -- what is called "metacognition," according to new research by scientists at Georgia State University and the University at Buffalo.

Michael J. Beran and Bonnie M. Perdue of the Georgia State Language Research Center (LRC) and J. David Smith of the University at Buffalo conducted the research, published in the journal Psychological Science of the Association for Psychological Science.

"The demonstration of metacognition in nonhuman primates has important implications regarding the emergence of self-reflective mind during humans' cognitive evolution," the research team noted.

Metacognition is the ability to recognize one's own cognitive states. For example, a game show contestant must make the decision to "phone a friend" or risk it all, dependent on how confident he or she is in knowing the answer.

"There has been an intense debate in the scientific literature in recent years over whether metacognition is unique to humans," Beran said.

Chimpanzees at Georgia State's LRC have been trained to use a language-like system of symbols to name things, giving researchers a unique way to query animals about their states of knowing or not knowing.

In the experiment, researchers tested the chimpanzees on a task that required them to use symbols to name what food was hidden in a location. If a piece of banana was hidden, the chimpanzees would report that fact and gain the food by touching the symbol for banana on their symbol keyboards.

But then, the researchers provided chimpanzees either with complete or incomplete information about the identity of the food rewards.

In some cases, the chimpanzees had already seen what item was available in the hidden location and could immediately name it by touching the correct symbol without going to look at the item in the hidden location to see what it was.

In other cases, the chimpanzees could not know what food item was in the hidden location, because either they had not seen any food yet on that trial, or because even if they had seen a food item, it may not have been the one moved to the hidden location.

In those cases, they should have first gone to look in the hidden location before trying to name any food.

In the end, chimpanzees named items immediately and directly when they knew what was there, but they sought out more information before naming when they did not already know.

The research team said, "This pattern of behavior reflects a controlled information-seeking capacity that serves to support intelligent responding, and it strongly suggests that our closest living relative has metacognitive abilities closely related to those of humans."

The research was supported in part by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
