How to Hack Google Like NSA's Top Cyberspies

There?s a reason they call it cyberspace: Like space, the Internet has grown so expansive that we?ll likely never know all its secrets. Indeed, cyberspace is so deep and complex that even the National Security Agency?s top cyberspies are struggling to comprehend it. But that hasn?t stopped them from trying.

Thanks to a FOIA request filed in April by MuckRock, a service that files FOIA requests on behalf of journalists and others, you can learn to surf the web like one of the NSA?s top cyber sleuths. The agency recently released a 643-page book, called Untangling the Web: A Guide to Internet Research, that is full of tips on doing web research ? including an entire section dedicated to ?Google Hacking.?

What is Google hacking? The author of NSA?s book is quick to note that there is nothing unknown or illegal about the practice ? noting that much of it was first revealed in Johnny Long?s 2004 book ?Google Hacking for Penetration Testers? ? but that it will help you ?access publicly available information that almost certainly was not intended for public distribution? (cybersecurity professionals, take note).

Here are five of the hacking tips the author recommends.

1. Limit search by site

?This can be as broad as a country [site:fr] or as specific as an individual server on a company website [site:office.microsoft.com].?

2. Be as specific as possible

?You will have a lot more success searching for information within the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs [site:fmprce.cn.gov] than looking at all the sites indexed for China [site:cn] or even for the government of China [site:gov.cn].?

3. Add keywords

?Here?s where your subject matter knowledge and creativity really help. You are the best source of information about what words are most likely to yield the best quality and quantity of useful information. As a general rule, more uncommon words work best (consider using unusual proper names).?

4. Limit search by file type

?Most of the best information found by Google hackers is not on webpages (HTML) but in other types of files. Try all or most of the file types one at a time (these are not the only searchable types; check the particular search engine?s documentation . . . for others.?

5. Use Google hacking techniques to search inside websites requiring registration

?You will frequently encounter a website, perhaps a database, that requires registration to view its contents. On occasion you can use Google to get at that data without registering.?

The author of the document is quick to note that nobody should use these techniques for cracking ? i.e. breaking into websites and servers ? but rather, the author encourages readers to ?hack? their own websites ?to see what kinds of information is being revealed inadvertently via Google and other search engines.?

So, perhaps, it?s best to view it as a cyber defense manual ? unless, of course, that?s not how you intend to use it.

McDonald's Down on Slow April ? Avian Flu, Stiff Competition, Poor ...

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) certainly has a mixed bag of problems to deal with.

The company said Wednesday that sales at restaurants open more than a year slipped again in April, according to The New York Times. The company laid blame, in part at least, on declines in Asia, where fears over a new strain of avian flu have hurt revenue.

Although sales figures included an increase of 0.7 percent in the United States, that wasn?t enough to overcome the combination of lower sales in China and a decline of 2.4 percent in Europe, McDonald?s biggest market by revenue.

Bird flu isn?t the only problem for McDonald's, according to Reuters. The company, along with Wendy's (NASDAQ: WEN) and other U.S. restaurants is battling for the attention of deal-seeking coupon-toting customers checking out limited time offers and other promotions before deciding where to spend their fast food dollars.

Fortunately, overall food costs remain stable, giving McDonald?s and other fast food operators "more ammunition to play the promotional and value game if they want to," according to Edward Jones analyst Jack Russo. And, for its part, McDonald's has promised to roll out more limited-time offers and other special deals in order to attract and retain customers. The company is even willing to shave profit margins to win market share.

Slack sales, however, might also emanate from something imminently more fixable than avian flu or competition. It might have something to do with customer service. Or, the lack thereof.

Somebody at McDonald?s thinks so. That somebody is Steve Levigne, McDonald?s vice president of business research who conducted a recent webinar for franchisees, according to The Wall Street Journal. In the webcast, McDonald?s noted that 20 percent of customer complaints are due to ?unfriendly service.?

Levigne even went so far as to say in the webcast that McDonald?s ?service is broken,? citing ?rude or unprofessional employees? as the root cause.

McDonald?s spends an estimated $2 billion annually on advertising to attract customers. When rude or indifferent counter personnel alienate them, many decide to choose another fast food restaurant next time they eat out.

With razor-thin margins, stiff competition, and avian flu all cutting into profits, McDonald?s knows any customer service problems must be fixed. The webinar is a start.

In fast food world, shares of McDonald's ended Wednesday down 1.3 percent at $100.95, while Wendy's stock fell 5.6 percent to $5.78. U.S.-traded shares of Tim Hortons Inc. (NYSE: THI) finished down 2.4 percent at $56.95. Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM) shares closed up 1.4 percent at $69.58 on the day.

Pakistan Taliban plan to attack landmark election

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's Taliban plan to carry out suicide bombings during Saturday's election in a bid to undermine the poll, according to a letter from the leader of the militant group.

Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, in a message to the group's spokesman, outlined plans for attacks, including suicide blasts, in all four of the country's provinces.

"We don't accept the system of infidels which is called democracy," Mehsud said in the letter, dated May 1, and obtained by Reuters on Thursday.

Since April, the al Qaeda-linked Pakistani Taliban have killed more than 100 people in attacks on candidates and rallies, particularly those of secular-leaning parties, in a bid to undermine elections they regard as un-Islamic.

The attacks have prevented candidates from the three main parties in the ruling coalition from holding big rallies. Instead, they have relied on door-to-door campaigning or small meetings in homes or on street corners.

On Thursday, gunmen kidnapped the son of Yusuf Raza Gilani, former prime minister and stalwart of the outgoing Pakistan People's Party (PPP), as he was headed to a small political gathering, police said. Ali Haider Gilani's secretary and guard were shot dead in the incident.

MILITANTS SPARE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY

However, the militants have not attacked the main opposition party led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which has courted support from groups accused of supporting militancy.

Sharif, who is seen as favorite to become the next prime minister, says Pakistan should reconsider its support for the U.S. war on Islamist militancy and suggests he would be in favor of negotiations with the Taliban.

Nor have the Taliban attacked former cricketer Imran Khan's party, which advocates shooting down U.S. drones and withdrawing the Pakistani military from insurgency-infested ethnic Pashtun areas along the Afghan border.

The letter from Mehsud is bound to raise fears of attacks during the historic vote.

Pakistan's military said on Thursday it would send tens of thousands of troops to polling stations and counting centers to prevent the Taliban from disrupting the election.

The polls, already Pakistan's most violent, marks the first time that a civilian government will complete a full term and hand over to another administration.

The Taliban are blamed for many of the suicide bombings across Pakistan, a nuclear-armed strategic ally.

Army spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa said 300,000 security officials, including 32,000 troops, had been deployed in Punjab, the most populous province.

"Definitely they have reports and obviously they have made a plan to counter that," newspapers quoted him as saying, referring to security agencies getting threats of violence from the Taliban.

Another 96,000 security forces would be deployed in the northwest of Pakistan, where the Taliban operate from strongholds.

Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) has capitalized on widespread frustrations with the outgoing government led by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

The military has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 66-year history, either through coups or from behind the scenes.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Penn State has 67 scholarship players on its football roster and coach Bill O'Brien sees no reason why that will change significantly by the time the season starts Aug. 31.

O'Brien said Wednesday he doesn't expect a second wave of departures from the Nittany Lions, even though NCAA sanctions still allow his players to transfer without sitting out a season.

Ten players transferred out of Penn State after the NCAA handed down severe sanctions last summer in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. O'Brien was forced to prepare for his first preseason practice with uncertainty over who would show up for training camp.

Players can still leave without penalty until the 2013 season starts, but O'Brien said he has not spent any time this offseason re-recruiting his guys.

"I don't see the mass exodus coming," O'Brien said before speaking to a banquet hall full of Penn State supporters in midtown Manhattan. "We're going to coach who shows up July 31st for training camp. I think we're way past that. I think our kids are committed."

The Penn State coaches' caravan was making one of its final stops before heading home to State College, Pa., and O'Brien, as usual, was the headliner. Men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers, field hockey coach Charlene Morett and men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik also spoke, but it was O'Brien who received a standing ovation at the fundraiser.

O'Brien quoted his predecessor, Joe Paterno, as he finished off his 15-minute pep talk, appealing to the crowd to fill Beaver Stadium on Saturdays this season.

"I don't want your two cents, but I do want your money," O'Brien said, drawing laughs and applause.

Penn State, with an average attendance of about 96,700, was at 91-percent capacity in 2012, down from the usual 97-98 percent. The Nittany Lions went 8-4 in O'Brien's first season.

After O'Brien took over, the NCAA docked Penn State 20 scholarships per year for three years, starting with the latest recruiting class. The Nittany Lions are in the second season of a four-year postseason ban. The NCAA allows major college football teams a maximum of 85 scholarship players, and most of Penn State's competition will be at or near that number.

"I believe we have a really good core of players. I'm not going to get into whether we can win the Big Ten or not," he said. "But I think we have really good core players and believe we can be a competitive team every single Saturday because of the type of roster that we have right now.

"Going forward when you get into the '14-, '15-, '16-range it becomes more and more difficult. I would never ever count these Penn State kids out or this Penn State program out. We'll show up every Saturday. Our job is very, very challenging, but I think we can be very, very competitive."

O'Brien said the possibility of players transferring out during the summer was never a factor in how he and his staff approached spring practice and preparation for the 2013 season.

"We don't go to work every day begging our kids to stay here. We don't think about that," O'Brien said. "What I've been struck with at Penn State is we have fantastic guys, we have a great locker room."

O'Brien, who was the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator before taking over at Penn State, was approached by NFL teams looking for a head coach in the offseason, but he says the conversations never got far.

"In any line of work, if you're being recruited for another job, if you're doing right by your family, I don't think it's a bad thing to listen," he said. "I love Penn State. I have a connection with the guys I coach.

"I have a ton of respect for the National Football League from my time there. It was an honor to be contacted by some of those teams. But at the end of the day I felt that being here only a year wasn't the right thing to do. I wasn't offered any jobs, but I felt like it was time to say, 'I'm here at Penn State and I want to help this program get through a tough time.'"

Missouri mom killed when party bus doors fly open - U.S. News

A woman was struck by several cars after falling from a moving party bus on a Kansas City, Mo., interstate. KSHB's Garrett Haake reports.

A 26-year-old Missouri mother died Saturday after falling out of a "party bus" when the vehicle's emergency doors flew open while driving on a busy highway en route to what was supposed to be a fun night out with friends.

Jamie Frecks was out celebrating a friend's?bachelorette party when she fell out of the bus and was struck by at least three vehicles,?NBC Kansas City affiliate KSHB reports.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Frecks's aunt Cynthia Matteson said the family is?devastated?over the young mother's death and is demanding answers as to how the accident?occurred.

"Why wasn't it secured?" Matteson told KSHB. "A person hires a person for safety, to get you there and back home. Why wasn't she brought back home safe?"

Eddy Goetz, one of the owners of Midnight Express party bus, which operates the vehicle, said the company has "no idea" how the doors could have come open.

In a statement to KSBH, Goetz said: ?"On behalf of the owners and employees of Midnight Express party bus, we want to express our sincere sympathy for the family and friends touched by Saturday night?s tragic accident that took the life of Jamie Frecks. We are trying to find out how the tragic accident could have happened. We will cooperate fully with everyone to find out the cause of this accident."

Frecks leaves behind a 5-month-old child.

Are you jealous of BlackBerry 10? [Poll]

Our friends over at CrackBerry highlighted a forum thread today where a BlackBerry 10 user claimed their iPhone-totting friends were jealous of all the shiny new features that phone had to offer. I've been using a BlackBerry Z10 for over a month now, and while I like a lot of the ideas BlackBerry is testing out in their new OS, I'm not in the least bit inclined to switch over yet, and I'm not sure jealousy has reared its ugly head even once.

The gesture navigation, even if less discoverable, is great once you get the hang of it, as are features like peek, where you can glimpse messages without transitioning completely into them, and the hub where all communications are aggregated. It really does feel like webOS all grown up, now sporting a suit and a tie. But there are still the types of quirks you'd expect to find in any new operating system, which need smoothing out and polishing up, and not only are a lot of major apps still missing, I can't find any of the apps I use every day on any platform outside iOS (looking at you Twitterrific, Tweetbot, Launch Center Pro, Fantastical, Drafts, Elements, etc.)

But I'm curious, if you've had a chance to see or try out BlackBerry 10, have you felt the least bit jealous? iOS is now the oldest platform in mobile, and BlackBerry 10 the newest, does that tempt you in any way? Or are you too busy enjoying what's still the best interface, app, and content experience to have even noticed BB10 yet?
